Former president Goodluck Jonathan has broken silence on the prospects of throwing his hat into the 2023 ring as the nation prepares for the forthcoming general elections.
The former president who spoke while receiving a team of supporters calling on him to declare for the 2023 presidential election, said he cannot make any official statement right now because some processes are still ongoing.
A group codenamed Youth Compatriots of Nigeria stormed Jonathan’s office, urging him to declare his intention to contest for presidency.
The convener of the group, Major Samuel, in his address said Nigerians have realised the mistakes they made in 2015 by voting Jonathan out of power. Samuel added that the former president has the necessary experience and capacity to drive Nigeria out of the mess it found itself.
“Now, we know better, under Jonathan the minimum wage could buy one or two bags of rice. What do we have today? We are begging President Jonathan to forgive us, we have realized our mistakes, we want him back to complete what he started,” Samuel said.
Jonathan, in his response said he is still undergoing some processes before making an official declaration.
The former president, with his response may have failed to totally turned down clamour for him to join the contest for the 2023 presidency by telling his supporters to watch out.
In his words, “I cannot declare because some process are still ongoing.”
“Yes you are calling me to come and declare for the next election, I cannot tell I’m declaring. The political process is ongoing just watch out. The key role you must play is that Nigeria must get somebody that will carry young people along.”
