The Immediate Past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano is spending his first weekend in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), days after leaving office.

Obiano joined the long list of former political office holders who found themselves in the anti-graft agency’s net hours after transmitting power.

The former governor was apprehended by the operatives of the EFCC at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and whisked away to the Lagos office and later moved to the Abuja office of the commission, Friday.

While the EFCC still remains mum on the details of the arrest, a source privy to the matter said the commission is grilling Obiano over alleged misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N42 billion, which include N5bn Sure-P and N37bn security vote which was withdrawn in cash.

According to the source, the former governor allegedly diverted the said funds to finance political activities in the state.

The source also said the EFCC is also in possession of other petitions on corruption against Obiano. One of such petitions as alleged by the source is the massive corruption in the management of the N17bn Paris Club refund to the state.

“There are also petitions alleging inflated projects, including the Umueri International Airport project whose cost was believed to be exaggerated. The EFCC has been doing its investigations all this while and are convinced that Obiano has a case to answer,” the source was quoted as saying.
