Some Nigerians have begun to commend Super Eagles Captain Ahmed Musa for donating a whopping sum of N2million to 1996 Olympic Gold medalist, Kingsley Obiekwu.
Obiekwu, a member of the Atlanta ’96 Olympics Gold medal-winning Dream Team, had recently opened up on his financial struggles especially how he uses his only car for commercial transport to sustain his family.
Also, Okwuluora, a broadcast journalist with huge Facebook following in the South-East, recently wrote a report on how he found the Nigerian Olympic Gold Medalist trying to make ends meet at a taxi park in Abakpa, Enugu.
Kingsley Obiekwu, who played alongside Kanu Nwankwo and other great Super Eagles stars, had been using his car, a Toyota Sienna, as a taxi to drive passengers to Nsukka in order to earn some money to look after himself and his family.
The former Nigerian international said he had been having it rough since 2008 when he tried to settle down in Nigeria. Obiekwu, fondly called ‘Shagari Udoji’ by football lovers in Nigeria, told Okwuluora of his struggles as a coach and a taxi driver in Nigeria.
A national hero who helped the country achieve the greatest football achievement yet on the global stage now had to settle for a difficult daily commute in order to feed himself and his family. Obiekwu also told Okwuluora that he is willing to shoot a documentary to instruct younger persons with his personal story.
The 47-year-old former defender fondly referred to as “Shagari”, played for Rangers International FC, Enugu and Udoji United.
Confirming the donation, several associates of the former CSKA Moscow forward announced the development on Twitter.
However, the report has attracted massive reactions on social media most especially on the micro blogging platform, Twitter, as many commended Ahmed Musa for his magnanimous gesture and few journalists also appreciated the efforts of Okwuluora that reported the story.
