Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mr Mele Kyari has tendered appology to Nigerians over the importation of the off-spec PMS, otherwise known as Petrol, with telling effects nationwide.

The apology was made on Wednesday by Kyari when he appeared before the house of representatives committee on petroleum downstream, noting that NNPC was not aware of the presence of methanol in the fuel imported.

He said: “We regret this situation. It is completely unavoidable, we didn’t see it coming. We apologise to Nigerians. We didn’t see this coming.

“The loading terminal where the fuel was brought into the country has been supplying gasoline for a very long time, they have been a major terminal supplying fuel to not only West Africa but to many countries in Europe.

“NNPC Limited is doing everything possible to ensure that fuel supply across the country is normalised,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to avoid panic buying of fuel.

The house of representatives had earlier called on the NNPC Limited to suspend the companies involved in the importation of methanol-blended petrol.

The lower legislative chamber also asked the NNPC to provide the names of the companies to its committee for investigation.

The resolution was passed during the plenary session on Thursday following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Mohammed Monguno.

The Goup managing director of the NNPC Limited had earlier claimed MRS, Oando, Emadeb Consortium, and Duke Oil, a subsidiary of the NNPC, imported the methanol-blended petrol, something that has been heavily contested.
