The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta was today shut down by students over alleged poor living condition and allegations of fraud against the Institute’s management, The New Diplomat has learnt.

The students who carried placards with inscriptions reading sundry demands such as “Our cleaners are dying, pay them,” “No hostel for females living with mosquitoes, living with snakes. We came to learn not to die”, “Give us our sports money-N2000 Management fraud,” among others said the Institute will remain shut down until their three point demands were met in its entirety.

The students who were threatened not to speak with the press confided in The New Diplomat saying about 48 students live in a single room in the hostel. They said the hostel has now been overtaken by snakes and weeds.

The students also noted that there is no electricity supply at the laboratories for students to carry out practical works, despite PTI being one of the foremost technological training institutes in Africa with huge contribution of technical manpowers to the nation’s Oil/Gas and allied industries.

They added that the institute’s management allegedly collected N2000 from each students and tendered only N500,000 as against N3.6 million that should have been handed to Student’s Union Government to celebrste coming students’ week which was billed for Monday, June 12.

The students, therefore, tendered a three point demands before the institute’s management before the school’s gate will be opened.

The demands are that the institute give the female students a hostel or refund their money, proper clearing of the grass, fumigation of the hostel and provision for light at the laboratory among others.
