Some armed men on Sunday invaded the Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau state opening fire on the security operatives present there.

The Military Information Officer for Operation Safe Haven, Major Ishaku, confirmed the attack to the press, but was silent on the number of casualties.

It is also not clear as at press time if any inmate escaped from the Centre during the attack.

Ishaku also disclosed that a joint task force has been deployed to the Correctional Centre.

The New Diplomat recalls that Nigeria has witnessed five major prison breaks since October, 2020. The Benin and Oko custodial centres in Edo State; the Owerri Custodial Centre in Imo State; the medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kabba, Kogi State and the Abolongo Custodial Centre have all experienced attacks during which several inmates escaped.
