Seun, one of the sons of the Late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has disclosed that his father was never invited for any award ceremony while he was alive.

He made this known while receiving an award on behalf of his late father, who was honoured posthumously at the 70th anniversary of the SIGMA Club, University of Ibadan, held in Lagos, recently.

He however added that his dad’s cabinet was empty while he was alive but he began to receive recognition after his death.

His words: My father did not receive any awards when he was alive because he was not invited to any. Fela’s award cabinet was about empty when he was alive. It is such a good thing to have this award on behalf of my family.”

He also noted that renowned juju musician, Ebenezer Obey, was the only one among the elites who visited Fela’s family and gave him (Seun) money when his father died in 1997.

The statement read:

“Chief Ebenezer Obey was the only one that came and gave me money. I was 14 years old at the time and N20,000 was a lot of money. That is why when I am asked who my favourite musician is, I am not afraid to say his name (Obey). (However), I would not like to diminish the efforts made by the Late Victor Uwaifo who was a good friend of my dad too before his death.”

Seun Kuti is a Nigerian musician and singer and the youngest son of the famous Afrobeat pioneer, Fela. Kuti Seun leads his father’s former band Egypt 80.
