Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, has fulfilled his financial pledge to Nigerian athletes who participated at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Recall Dare had promised to financially reward the Paralympic athletes following their excellent outing at the Games in Tokyo.
The reports further revealed that, athletes who won gold were rewarded with $10,000 each, while those who won silver and bronze medals got $8,000 and $7,000 respectively.
Nigeria featured 22 athletes in four events at the Games.
“The athletes have been receiving the funds promised them by the minister and I’m told that the gold medallists got $10,000,” a top ministry official.
Nigeria won a total of 10 medals: four gold, one silver and five bronze medals at the Games.
Team Nigeria captain at the Games Lucy Ejike also confirmed that they had been paid.
“I can confirm that the sports minister Sunday Dare has fulfilled his promise to the athletes to the Tokyo Paralympics,” Ejike, who won bronze in women’s powerlifting, said.
“It was delayed because it passed through some processes, but I’m happy I received my alert Tuesday morning.”
The athletes took part in powerlifting, para-athletics, para-table tennis and para-rowing in Tokyo.
