A British lawmaker, David Amess has been stabbed to death while holding regular meetings with constituents at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, east of London, Friday.

According to reports, the 69-year-old lawmaker was stabbed repeatedly by an unidentified man.

The lawmaker who was elected under the platform of the Conservative party was immediately rushed to a hospital, but medical services proved abortive.

The Essex Police has also confirmed the incident in a terse statement. The police confirmed that they received a report of a stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea at 12:05 BST. A man who was alleged to be involved in the murder has also been apprehended by the police operatives.

“He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene. A 25-year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered,” the statement reads.

Amess, married with five children, was first elected to parliament to represent Basildon in 1983, and then stood for Southend West in 1997. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his public service in 2015.

Amess was a staunch supporter of the Brexit campaign that saw Britain exit the European Union. He was a devout Catholic, and supported animal welfare issues and was anti-abortion.
