Indications emerged at the weekend that the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr Philip Shaibu, would dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for yet undisclosed party.

This move, political pundits, fear could spell doom for the ruling party in the state.

A report by Vanguard newspaper suggested that the deputy governor’s consideration is hinged on the alleged strain relationship between him and his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Quoting a source believed to be privy to the saga, the newspaper noted that the duo have been at logger heads over some policy decisions which Shaibu was not comfortable with.

The source was said to have also confirmed that Shaibu has held several meetings with some party chieftains outside the country during which he voiced his grievances.

“Philip Shaibu is one man I admire as a political tactician and Maradona in the Edo political space. Quitting PDP may frustrate the developmental plans of the Obaseki’s administration due to his nuts and bolts experience as a voracious student of politics, as well as his sterling track record and pedigree as a fearless and charismatic lawmaker,” the source reportedly said.

He further noted that the Deputy Governor may not join any other political party immediately after quitting the PDP.

When contacted, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, denied knowledge of the development.
