The Nigerian government has in strong terms condemned the coup d’etat orchestrated by the military in the Republic of Guinea, Sunday.

Earlier, The New Diplomat had reported that Army putschists in Guinea on Sunday staged a coup in Guinean capital, Conakry and arrested President Alpha Conde.

In a video sighted by The New Diplomat, the president of Guinea was seen looking rumpled as he sat on a sofa, surrounded by troops.

The officer who spoke after the successful coup disclosed that the Guinea’s land and air borders have been shut and the government dissolved.

Reacting to the development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the unconstitutional change of government in Guinea, calling on the orchestrators of the coup to with immediate effect restore constitutional order.

This was contained in a press release titled ‘Nigerian Government Condemns Could D’Etat In Guinea,’ and signed by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esther Sunsuwa.

The statement reads, “The Nigerian government is saddened by the apparent coup d’etat that has taken place in the Republic of Guinea today, in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“The Government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind the coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect lives and property.”
