The Friends of Earth Africa (FoEA) has called for an urgent need for a global transformation to 100 per cent renewable energy system from dirty energy projects.
The dirty energy was listed as fossil fuels, nuclear, mega dams, industrial agrofuels and biomass, and waste-to-energy incineration.
This was contained in a report recently released by FoEA, titled: ‘A Just Recovery Renewable Energy Plan for Africa’.
The organisation in the report noted that the current global energy system cannot cater for the needs of individuals in the globe.
According to the report, about 800 million individuals across the world do not have access to electricity, adding that 600 million are residing in Africa.
The report described the generation of energy through fossil fuels as unsustainable, unjust and harming to communities, the environment and the climate, while lamenting the energy crisis bedeviling Africa.
According to a report by the World Energy Outlook 2020, the number of people without access to electricity in Africa rose by 13 million between 2019 and 2020, a development attributed to COVID-19.
While proscribing solutions in the report, FoEA called for a systemic change which will allow for 100% renewable energy.
The report added that renewable energy should be as small-scale and decentralised as possible, and all communities should have access to technology, knowledge and skills.
According to the report, energy access for all is a basic human right and a necessary condition for a dignified life, hence the need for a new model of energy generation.
