Powerlifter, Latifat Tijani has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Tijani defeated her counterpart, China’s Zhe Cui to win the gold in the women’s 45kg powerlifting competition.

The 39-year-old lifted 107kg to grab the gold medal, ensuring her fine form in the competition. Tijani was gold medalist at the Brazzaville 2015 Africa Games and silver medalist at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Yakubu Adesokan missed out on any medal, placing fourth in the men’s 49kg Powerlifting. His best lift was 155kg.

As of press time, Nigeria is 13th on the medal table with one gold, while China is currently occupying the first position with 6gold medals, 4 silver medals and 8 bronze medals.
