The Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed how the team will survive and qualify from the group stage in the 2021 African Cup of Nations.
Recall, Nigeria is in Group D of the tournament with Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau.
Rohr in an interview with newmen on August 15 admitted that Nigeria is in a tough group and reiterated his belief in the team and their potential to pull through.
He said he would like his team to win their first two matches which guarantees that team’s qualification for the next round.
Rohr noted that afterward, in the third game he would love to change his team to help starters in the previous games rest for the next round.
As he emphasized on the importance of starting the competition very well.
In his words: “I would like to win against the first two teams, and then I can bring in the third game, like I did in the last AFCON, the substitutes, and give rest to our starting players from the first two matches,” he said.
“If we win the first two matches, it is not a problem, we are qualified and then we can change our team. But of course, nobody will be underrated and we are not afraid of anybody.
“I think that most important is to start well the competition.”
Rohr also noted that his immediate priority is not the coming AFCON but the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, kicking off next month.
“Until January we have still a lot of things to do, especially the next game now at home against Liberia. That is the most important and then we will see step by step how it is going,” he said.
