The legal team of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation Ohaneze Ndigbo, has met with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to monitor the trial process of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The New Diplomat had reported that Ohaneze Ndigbo, has constituted a legal team aimed at monitoring the trial process of Kanu.

Kanu who had jumped bail and fled the country in 2017 was re-arrested and brought back to the country recently.

The separatist leader has resumed his trial at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court. He is being tried on charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony and managing an unlawful society among others.

The legal team constituted by Ohaneze met with the AGF on Monday to monitor the proceedings of Kanu’s trial.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations to the Office of the AGF, Jibrilu Gwandu.

In the statement, Malami commended the Ohaneze Ndigbo for succumbing to the rule of law.

The statement reads, “The group showed a mature departure from the mindset of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra when Ohanaeze said they ‘do not support the use of any form of violence’ while channelling concerns and presenting demands.

“By urging the youths to be law-abiding and sheath their sword as well as asking them to try to obtain a voter’s card to enable them to contribute to national development, the position of Ohanaeze becomes glaringly constitutional and commendable.” it read in part.

Malami also added that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari respects the rule of law, adding that Kanu’s trial will be done under the ambit of the laws of the country.
