Mrs. Uruemu Omeru Adejinmi, has made history by emerging as the first African and the first black female to be elected as a Mayor in the Republic of Ireland.

Adejinmi has been elected as cathaoirleach of the Longford Municipal District, where she currently sits as leas cathaoirleach.

Reacting to her victory in a statement, Adejinmi said that she was deeply honoured to take over the position.

She further added that she is committed to ensuring that there is growth and development in the Longford County Council.

“This is a historic day for Longford and I am delighted to share this moment with my family and friends,” she said.

“I look forward to working with my council colleagues, council exec and all stakeholders to continue the growth and development of our municipal area and county.”

Adejinmi is a daughter of the current Ovie of Agbon Kingdom, His Royal Majesty (HRM), Mike Omeru, Ogurime-Rime Ukori I.

Agbon Kingdom is located in Ethiope East Local Government Area In Delta State, Nigeria. It is one of the 24 Urhobo Kingdoms in the Niger Delta region.

Adejinmi’s father, HRM Ukori I is a business mogul and Chairman of Niger Cat Construction Company. He was crowned the Ovie (paramount ruler) of Agbon Kingdom in February 2013.

Adejinmi relocated to Longford, Ireland from Nigeria in 2003, and joined Fianna Fáil, an Irish Political party in 2016.

She became a local Councilor in 2020 and has previously served as an Executive Officer at the Department of Health.

Adejinmi also holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from Athlone Institute of Technology, Athlone, Ireland.

While speaking with an Irish Radio Station, RTÉ Radio One’s Drivetime, Adejinmi said: “I identify as Irish, I identify as African, I wear both hats with confidence and with comfort.”
