The most recent big ebola outbreak (2014-2016) took more than 11,000 lives across West Africa and beyond. At the time the World Health Organization was criticized for the slow response to what quickly became the worst ever recorded outbreak. When it all came to an end, promises were made to improve responsiveness and never let this happen again.

But ebola is back, this time in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO says three people are now dead with another 17 suspected of infection. Health officials are also trying to trace 125 people thought to be linked to the cases. Dr Laurie Garrett from the Council on Foreign Relations – also a Pulitzer Prize winning science.
