The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, declared on Tuesday that the Federal Government under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has the power and capacity to defeat the bandits and terrorist wreaking havoc in the country.

However, the minister stopped short of substantiating his boast with tangible evidence.

Nevertheless, he warned those calling for the resignation or impeachment of the president on account of alleged inability to tackle the worsening insecurity that such call is treasonable.

The minister, who spoke at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, noted that the government and its security agencies have the capacity and power in terms of personnel and fire power to crush bandits, insurgents, criminals and other enemies of the country.

His words, “It is no longer news that our dear nation is facing security challenges. However, I have read comments saying the Federal Government is overwhelmed and doesn’t have a clue as to how to tackle the challenges. Some have even gone as far as suggesting a truncation of the democratic order, a clearly treasonable stance.

“Well, I am here today to assure all Nigerians that while the government acknowledges the security challenges we face at this time, from terrorism to kidnaping, banditry and farmer-herder conflict, it is definitely not overwhelmed and indeed it has the wherewithal, as you will see in the days ahead, to confront the challenges headlong and restore law and order, peace and security.”

Many Nigerians have questioned the ability of Buhari to tackle the escalating insecurity situation of the country.

The New Diplomat recently reported that Aso Rock — Nigeria’s seat of power — which houses the President, members of the first family, the Vice President and family; and top government officials, and considered as the safest haven was breached by burglers on Monday.

There was an attempt to burgle the residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.

Also, the residence of the Administrative Officer, Mr Abubakar Maikano, was targeted by a burglar.

Presidential spokesperson, Mr Garba Shehu who confirmed the incidents described the attack as “a foolish attempt.”
