The Senate on Wednesday set up 7man ad-hoc committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West and poor response by security details attach to him.
The Red Chamber while condemning the incident directed the Inspector General of Police to fish out persons involved in the attempt to snip out life of the Senator. They also directed the IGP to bring forward to the Senate Committee on Police report on assassination on Masha Harry, Bola Ige among others.
They Senate also agree to send a high power delegation to Kogi State government to extract a fiat that the Kogi State Attorney General will allow a private legal practitioner to handle the case after police investigation.
The matter was raised through Senate standing order 42 and 52 during Wednesday plenary by Isah Misau. The lawmakers inform the Senate that during the Easter break there was assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West.
He wondered how the assassins were able to released almost 200 gun shots without single response from the 5 police details attach to the Senator. “A situation that almost 200 gun shots were fired and the 5 policemen attached to attach to Senator Dino Melaye did not respond call for a concern” Misau said.
In his contribution, Senator Shehu Sani said the assassination attack on Senator Dino Melaye called for a concern from all the lawmakers. He won against attempt to use violence in silencing anybody. “If anybody thinks by the use of violent he can silence anyone is a great mistake” Sani said.
Senator Philip Aduda added that the security agencies should be question on how the incident happened.
Senator senator Barau Jibril would serve as the chairman of the ad-hoc committee while other members are Senator Isa Misau, Foster Ogola, David Umaru, Chukwuka Utazi, Monsurat Sunmonu and Ibrahim Danbaba. They are expected to report back to the Senate in two weeks.
