United State(U.S.) voting rights activist and Democratic Party politician, Stacey Abrams has been nominated for the 2021 Edition of Nobel Peace Prize.

Abrams was nominated for the prize for her efforts in promoting nonviolent change via the ballot box.

Abrams played a critical role during the registration of voters for the U.S. 2020 Presidential election and the Senate runoff election in Georgia.

Abrams is a politician, lawyer, and author. She served as a lawmaker at the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017. She was also the candidate of Democratic Party at the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election, which she lost to Governor Brian Kemp.

Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party member of Norway’s parliament, stated that Abrams was nominated for her efforts in replicating the fight of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s

“Abrams’ work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights,” Haltbrekken stated.

“Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society,” Haltbrekken added.

Recall that King was a Baptist minister and a leader of the 1960s civil rights movement. He also won the Nobel prize in 1964 for his efforts in advocating for equality and civil rights.

Other nominees for the 2021 edition of Novel Peace Price includes; Russian dissident Alexei Navalny; former president Donald Trump; former White House Adviser, Jared Kushner; the World Health Organization and climate campaigner, Greta Thunberg.

The U.S. Black Lives Matter movement, as well as Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the “Pentagon Papers” about the Vietnam War, U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and WikiLeaks, have also been nominated, as have pro-democracy and civil rights campaigners from Belarus to Poland and Hungary.

The winner of the prize is expected to be announced in October.

The Peace Prize has been awarded to 106 individuals and 24 organizations, as of 2020. Seventeen women have also won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the World Food Programme for its efforts to provide food assistance in areas of conflict and to prevent the use of food as a weapon of war and conflict.

Other prominent awardees include Former U.S Presidents; Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.
