The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today, April 13th, 2017 arraigned one Abbas Tukur Ruma before Honourable Justice S.M Shuaibu of the Federal High Court Kaduna on a four count charge of illegal Possession of counterfeit currency.
Ruma was arrested by the officers of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps at Kaduna while in possession of counterfeit N99, 500.00 (Ninety Nine Thousand, Five Hundred Naira Only). The defendant was then transferred to EFCC for further investigation and prosecution. The investigation by the commission through forensic analysis revealed that the money were indeed fake.
When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.
In view of his plea, counsel for the prosecution, Musa Isah asked the court for a trial date. However the defence counsel S. Shuaibu moved motion for bail urging the court to admit the defendant to bail pending the determination of the case.
Justice Shuaibu granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1, 000,000 (One Million Naira Only) and one surety in like sum. The surety shall be resident with a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court. Proof of ownership of the landed property shall be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court. Also, both the defendant and the surety shall deposit their recent passport photograph with the DCR.
The case has been adjourned to 9th May, 2017 for hearing and the defendant was ordered to be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail terms.
