The Zamfara State Government has disclosed how it spent a total of N2.9 billion to purchase foodstuffs and other essential commodities for distribution as Ramadan welfare.
According to the state government, the essential commodities would be distributed to vulnerable persons, the less privileged, displaced persons, civil servants, among other categories of people.
This was contained in a statement released by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Ibrahim Dosara, issued on Sunday in Gusau, the state capital.
The commissioner said the state government purchased 450 trucks of foodstuffs and other essential commodities in a bid to reduce the hardships being faced by the people in the state and to enable them conduct the Ramadan fast with “relative ease and happiness”.
Further breakdown revealed that the state government purchased 60,000 bags of rice; 50,000 bags of millet, 50,000 bags of maize; 30,000 bags of beans; 10,00 bags of sugar; 40,000 pieces of shadda/attamfa.
The statement also disclosed that the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Nasiru Magarya, has been appointed as the Chairman of the main committee for distribution of the Ramadan welfare package.
According to the commissioner, the Speaker has assured that the distribution will get to all the local government in the state, adding that the committee will prioritised the less privileged, the vulnerable and the displaced persons.
“The Chairman, Committee for the distribution of this year’s Ramadan welfare packages and the Speaker Zamfara state House of Assembly Rt Hon Nasiru Muazu Magarya wishes to inform the general public that, Zamfara state government under the leadership of His Excellency Hon (Dr) Bello Matawalle, has purchased 450 trucks of foodstuffs and essential commodities worth 2.9 billion naira for distribution to the public as Ramadan welfare packages for the vulnerable, less privileged, internally displaced persons, civil servants and other categories of members of the public, to help in reducing the hardships being faced by people and to enable them conduct the Ramadan fast with relative ease and happiness,” the statement read.
