Kaduna State High Court on Monday ordered the men of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Kaduna to immediately move Zeenat, wife of Ibrahim El–Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) to Covid-19 treatment centre for proper care after contracting the virus.

Zeenat had tested positive for the virus at Kaduna Correctional centre last week, but prison authorities had denied her the opportunity to receive proper care, according to Mohammed, son of the IMN leader.

Counsel to El-Zakzaky, Femi Falana (SAN), in his argument for the release of El-Zakzaky’s wife for treatment, presented to the court a medical report to the effect.

Falana prayed the court to allow Zeenat seek medical treatment outside the correctional centre.

Acceding to the request, the presiding judge, Gideon Kurada ordered the men of NCS to allow her access medical care in line with NCDC’s protocols on Covid-19 infection treatment as Chris Umar, the prosecuting counsel welcomed Falana’s application.

Recall the secret trial of the IMN leader and his wife Zeenat began on Nov. 18, 2020, at the High Court.

The Kaduna State Government charged El-Zakzaky and Zeenat with eight counts bordering on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of the public peace among other charges.

The IMN leader and his wife pleaded not guilty to the charges of September 29. The State had so far presented eight who testified in secret before Justice Kurada. The court has fixed Jan. 26 as the date for resumption of the trial.
