- Accuses Ex-Gov Yari, Others of Plotting To Install Serving Governor As President In 2023
Senator Kabiru Marafa has accused some former Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some designated members of the Nigeria Governors Forum(NGF) of trying to hijack the national structure of the APC to foster their interests of installing a serving Governor as the President of the country in 2023.
Marafa, a former federal lawmaker, who stopped short at mentioning the name of the serving Governor being sponsored by some ex-governors as a possible President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor, also accused the APC Caretaker Committee headed by the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni of not doing enough in its reconciliation efforts with respect to Zamfara state.
According to the Senator from Zamfara state some people who are “crooks” were hellbent on pushing their 2023 presidency agenda through the Buni-led committee, not withstanding the fact that there are very good people in that committee.
Marafa made this disclosure to a national daily, while reacting to the comments of Zamfara former governor, Abdulaziz Yari who had said the APC in the state was intact without any cracks.
Recall since the fallouts of 2019 general elections which saw the APC losing the Northwest state to incumbent Governor Bello Matawalle of the People’s Democratic Party, the crisis rocking the APC in the state has continued unabatedly.
While Yari heads a faction of the APC in Zamfara, Marafa, considered a solid grassroots politician, heads another faction. Both camps have continued to talk tough in the media, unwilling to yield grounds.
As part of its mandate to placate aggrieved APC members in Zamfara state, it was reported that the Buni-led Committee had planned to meet all the party’s stakeholders in Zamfara over the feud among key party chieftains, in an attempt to broker a truce.
But it appears Marafa, who served in the 8th Assembly has become critical of the reconciliation posture of the APC Caretaker Committee in Zamfara state, if his latest outburst is anything to go by.
When asked whether Governor Buni shouldn’t bother intervening in the APC crisis in Zamfara, Marafa said: “All I know is the committee is already failing, and they are failing because they are listening to the likes of Yari who always speak from the two sides of their mouth.
“There are a few good people in the committee that mean well to the party and I advise them to wake up and do what they are asked to do and leave the politics of 2023. Nobody can bring the position of national chairman to the north now.
“The moves by some crooks within the governors’ forum to hijack the party and install a serving governor and an expired one to succeed President Buhari will crash the way Yari’s selfish agenda crashed totally.”
Though the 2023 presidential election looks pretty far away, politicians are already at it with sundry conversations and permutations going on among major power blocs.
The APC for instance, was reportedly considering an arrangement that would make the North have the party’s National Chairmanship position, while allowing the South to have the presidential ticket as both can hardly come from same the zone as seen in the previous political arrangements in the ruling APC and the opposition’s PDP.
