Former governor of Ondo State, and presidential candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has withdrawn from the presidential race.

Mimiko, after leaving the office in 2016 defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Labour Party and shortly after moved to the Zenith Labour Party, where he signified his intention to contest for the office of the president.

Following his withdrawal from the presidential race, he would be participating in the senatorial election for Ondo Central Senatorial District of Ondo State.

He announced his withdrawal from the presidential race while meeting with party faithful from the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State and some national leaders of the party in Ondo town on Thursday.

Mimiko said he had been inundated with calls from across the state and country on his presidential aspiration.

He said, rumours of a senatorial bid, got overwhelming, saying this informed his decision to jettison the presidential race as according to him,  it has been narrowed to a race between Atiku  Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also said he was asked to go for the senatorial race to help build the party and sustain it in the state and country.

Mimiko said “I took the decision in the ultimate interest of our party, the Zenith Labour Party, Ondo state and the country.

“I will now be running as the candidate of the ZLP for Ondo Central Senatorial district in next year’s election.”
