There is nothing as real as death. It puts meaning to life because it serves as the umpire who blows the final whistle at the end of the dicey game of life, thus signalling that life is nothing but an interlude between womb and tomb.

That interlude, like a flash in the pan, meaningful but short came to an end on Tuesday for the intrepid and patriotic Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile.

Arotile, the celebrated Nigerian Air Force’s first female combat helicopter pilot hailed from Iffe area in Ijumu Local Government of Kogi State. She was born in December 1995.

Arotile attended the Air Force Primary and Secondary Schools between 2000-2011 in Kaduna. Her passion for the Air Force remained undiminished as she joined the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna as a member of 64 Regular Course on September 2012.

Flying Officer Arotile was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force as a Pilot Officer on 16 September, 2017 and held a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the Nigerian Defence Academy.

She was selected to train in South Africa following her performance during her initial flying training course at 401 Flying Training School Kaduna.
As of 15 October 2019, she had acquired a feat of 460 hours of flight within 14 months in helicopter.

Arotile’s years of exertion and training culminated in celebration when she was decorated the first female fighter helicopter pilot the Nigerian Airforce in its 55 years of existence.
She held a commercial pilot license and also underwent tactical flying training on the Agusta 109 Power Attack Helicopter in Italy. Incidentally, she introduced the newly acquired Agusta 109 Power Attack Helicopter to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, during the induction ceremony at Eagle Square in Abuja on 6 February 2020.

She became the first female combat helicopter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force on 15 October 2019, after completing her flying training in South Africa.
She was decorated by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs (Dame) Pauline Tallen and the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar in October, 2019.

Barely a year, having been convinced of her competence, Tolulope’s became a household name when she was winged as Nigeria’s first ever female combat helicopter pilot.

She joined the Nigerian Air force out of passion.

In her words: “I joined the military simply out of passion for it. Being a military personnel has been a long time ambition, the carriage and what it stands for are simply exceptional”.

She displayed that fiery passion in her attitude to duties. Tolulope Arotile dared to walk and work in territories that send fear down the spines of men and make them cower around for safety.

In this part of the world, we don’t always associate courage with the womenfolk yet in her lifetime, she challenged convention and orthodoxy by choosing a profession whose main requirement, among others, is courage.

While our brave soldiers operate from the ground, hiding in trenches to confront the threat of those enemies without compunction, who set the value of human life at naught; Tolu chose to operate from the cockpit firing fatal shots from air and shattering the cauldrons of insurgency into smithereens.

No doubt, considering her choice of profession — she knew what she wanted in life and went for it– she must have lived not just an eventful life but also a purposeful one.

Ironically, the heroine did not die while airborne but in a fatal road accident.
According to NAF, Tolulope Arotile died today, 14 July 2020, as a result of head injuries sustained from a road traffic accident at NAF Base Kaduna.

Meanwhile, a flood tide of tributes have been pouring in for the fallen heroine on social media.
